FIFA Imposes New Ban on Panama Football Chief for Misconduct

FIFA has issued a six-month ban on Manuel Arias, the president of the Panama Football Federation, following his failure to adhere to a previous suspension related to fat-shaming a player from the women’s national team. This decision comes shortly after Panama secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The ban, announced by FIFA’s disciplinary judges, prevents Arias from participating in any football-related activities until it expires approximately four weeks before the World Cup begins. In addition to the suspension, Arias has been fined 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately $25,000) for not complying with a previous ruling imposed by FIFA’s ethics committee, which had already barred him for a six-month period ending in July 2024.

Arias has not publicly detailed how he breached the earlier ban, which followed critical comments he made regarding a member of the women’s national team. In March 2024, he acknowledged that his remarks were “unfortunate” after facing backlash for his comments about the team’s setup, which had qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

During his initial suspension, Arias missed two critical World Cup qualifying matches in June, along with the opportunity to attend the World Cup draw scheduled for December 5, 2023, in Washington, D.C. This latest ban further complicates his position as Panama’s football leadership faces scrutiny amid ongoing developments in women’s football.

Arias retains the option to appeal FIFA’s recent sanctions, but the impact of his actions has already stirred controversy within both national and international football circles.

On the field, Panama solidified its place at the men’s World Cup by defeating their opponent with a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, while the previous group leader suffered a 3-1 loss. The team’s achievement in qualifying for the tournament marks a significant milestone, contrasting with the challenges faced by its leadership.
