India is set to reshape its online gaming industry with the introduction of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Games Act, which will come into effect in October 2025. This landmark legislation aims to address the fragmented regulatory environment that has stifled growth in a sector now boasting over 450 million online gamers. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, operators must store player data within India and disclose any transfers outside the country.
