Liverpool Dominates Athletic Club 4-1 in Preseason Opener

Liverpool FC showcased their prowess in a commanding 4-1 victory over Athletic Club during the first of two preseason friendlies held at Anfield on July 31, 2023. The match not only marked a successful return to their home ground, but also served as a tribute to the late striker Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who both recently passed away.
Before kick-off, former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson and Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths in front of the Kop in remembrance. The atmosphere was charged with emotion, as fans echoed Jota’s song throughout the match. A moment of applause in the 20th minute honored Jota’s shirt number, which Liverpool confirmed would be retired.
The match began with Liverpool quickly asserting their dominance. Just two minutes in, 16-year-old Ngumoha stunned spectators with a remarkable solo goal, driving from his own half and curling the ball into the far corner. This goal marked Ngumoha’s second strike of the preseason, following his impressive performance against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.
Ngumoha’s early brilliance was followed by an assist, as he headed the ball down for Núñez, who swept it in from close range only five minutes later. Athletic Club attempted to respond, with a shot from one of their players crashing against the top of the crossbar, but Liverpool continued to find the back of the net. Just before halftime, Doak added a third goal, sending a low shot that slipped under Athletic Club’s goalkeeper, Alez Padilla.
As the second half commenced, Athletic Club’s Guruzeta tested Liverpool’s youth international goalkeeper with a difficult save, but Liverpool maintained their momentum. Núñez once again turned provider, setting up Elliott to score Liverpool’s fourth goal just before the hour mark.
Athletic Club managed to score a consolation goal in the 76th minute, with Guruzeta heading the ball into the net, but it did little to dampen Liverpool’s spirits. Both teams are expected to make significant changes for the second match of the double-header, with Liverpool’s captain set to miss out due to illness, and a defender absent due to injury. Additionally, goalkeeper Alisson Becker will not participate after leaving the preseason tour for personal reasons.
This match not only highlighted the emerging talent within the Liverpool squad but also served as a poignant reminder of the impact of loss on the club. As both teams prepare for a second friendly later that evening, fans are eager to see how the line-ups will evolve and what further surprises the young Liverpool side may bring.
