Sturm Graz Prepares for Celtic’s Response in Europa League Clash
Jurgen Saumel, the head coach of Sturm Graz, is preparing his team for a challenging clash against Celtic at Parkhead on October 5, 2023. The match is part of the Europa League group stage, and Saumel is aware that the Scottish side will be seeking to rebound from a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Dundee in their recent Premiership match.
Celtic currently sits five points behind Premiership leaders Hearts. They will face Hearts again at Tynecastle just days after the Europa League fixture. Before focusing on their domestic league, Celtic aims to improve their standing in Europe, having collected only one point from their first two group matches.
Sturm Graz comes into this match on a high note, having secured a 2-1 victory against Rangers in their last outing on October 2. Despite a previous loss to Midtjylland, the Austrian club is currently leading the Austrian Bundesliga, riding a wave of four consecutive wins across all competitions. Saumel recognizes the importance of maintaining this momentum in Glasgow.
In addressing the media at Celtic Park, Saumel remarked, “We expect a Celtic team that will give everything, that wants to show a reaction after they lost the last game.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on his own team’s performance and principles, stating that they aim to improve with each game in Europe.
Saumel expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to compete. “If we can make another step tomorrow with a great performance, we can get something out of this game,” he noted. He acknowledged Celtic’s strengths, highlighting the talent within their ranks but reiterated the need for his players to show courage and resilience.
As Sturm Graz prepares for the match, Saumel highlighted the need for tactical discipline. “There will be periods where Celtic will push, and we will have to defend deeply while also being dangerous ourselves,” he explained. He added, “We have speed and we can always score goals.”
This encounter promises to be a significant test for both teams as they seek to enhance their standing in the Europa League and gain valuable experience on the European stage. The outcome could have implications beyond the match itself, influencing the trajectory of both Sturm Graz and Celtic in their respective campaigns.
