Torbjorn Heggem Thrives at Bologna After West Brom Exit
West Bromwich Albion fans experienced disappointment when Torbjorn Heggem departed The Hawthorns for Bologna during the summer transfer window. The club faced financial challenges inherited from previous ownership, prompting the need to balance the books through player sales. Heggem’s transfer to Italy was finalized for a reported fee of approximately £10 million, marking a remarkable profit for the Baggies after acquiring him from Swedish club Brommapojkarna for £500,000 just a year earlier.
During his time at West Brom, Heggem became a key player under various managers, including Carlos Corberan, Tony Mowbray, and interim coach James Morrison. He played in nearly every match during the club’s second-tier campaign, demonstrating his value to the team, particularly in strengthening the defense. His impressive performances led to interest from larger clubs, making his transfer a significant boost to West Brom’s financial situation as they aimed for promotion under new manager Ryan Mason.
Heggem’s Early Days at Bologna
Since joining Bologna, Heggem signed a contract extending through 2029, aiming to contribute to the team’s success following a commendable ninth-place finish in Serie A last season, which included winning the Coppa Italia and qualifying for the Europa League. In his first match against Roma, Heggem was initially a substitute but made an impact in his home debut against Como, where he played the full match in a 1-0 victory.
Heggem has since started in matches against notable teams such as AC Milan, Genoa, and Fiorentina. Currently, he has participated in nine Serie A games, helping Bologna achieve just one defeat during this stretch. The team is enjoying an impressive eight-game unbeaten streak, positioning themselves fifth in the league.
His contributions have also extended to European competition, where he played 45 minutes in a 2-1 victory over FCSB and completed the full match in a goalless draw against SK Brann. According to statistics from FotMob, Heggem has won 34 duels, made 20 recoveries, and boasts a passing accuracy of 91.9% in his early performances.
A Promising Future in Italy
While West Brom supporters may feel the loss of Heggem, they can take solace in his positive start in Italy. The young defender has quickly made a name for himself in Serie A, showcasing the skills that endeared him to fans during his tenure at West Brom. His ability to adapt to a top-tier league highlights his potential for further growth in his career.
Despite limited activity on social media—only sharing two posts related to his Bologna journey—Heggem appears focused on his on-field performance. His last Instagram update showcased the team’s resounding 4-0 victory over Pisa five weeks ago, reflecting his commitment to the game.
As Heggem continues to establish himself in Italy, he has already begun to demonstrate the defensive prowess that made him a fan favorite at West Brom, proving that his talent is well-suited for one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
