Xabi Alonso Encourages Trent Alexander-Arnold Ahead of Anfield Return
Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has expressed his hopes that Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoys his first return to Anfield, despite facing a likely hostile reception from Liverpool fans. Alexander-Arnold’s decision not to renew his contract with Liverpool and his subsequent move to Real Madrid this summer has left some supporters feeling betrayed.
Liverpool reportedly received £8.4 million to effectively buy out the final weeks of Alexander-Arnold’s contract, allowing him to participate in the upcoming Club World Cup. However, many fans remain upset with how he managed his departure, which led to him being booed during a match against Arsenal in May. As he prepares to face Liverpool again, the reception he receives on Tuesday evening could reflect this discontent, particularly since he has not played in the last two matches after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in mid-September 2023.
Alonso, who has fond memories of his own time at Liverpool, acknowledged the emotional complexities of the situation. “We haven’t spoken about that precisely, but we have spoken about the team, the club,” he stated. He emphasized that Alexander-Arnold should approach the match in his own way, noting, “For sure his history is different from mine. He needs to enjoy that moment because it is nice to be back.”
Before the press conference, Alexander-Arnold paid tribute to his late teammate, Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash in July. He laid a personal message at the temporary memorial at Anfield, expressing his deep feelings for Jota and the bond they shared. In his handwritten note, he wrote: “My mate Diogo. You are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre’s memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day. Love Trent and family. Forever 20. YNWA.”
As the match approaches, Alonso also extended words of support to current Liverpool player Florian Wirtz, who struggled after his £100 million summer transfer. Wirtz played a pivotal role in Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side that won the Bundesliga in 2024. Alonso expressed confidence in Wirtz’s abilities, stating, “I have no doubts. It is just a matter of time. It is a big change for him to come to Liverpool after so many years in Germany. He is a really special player.”
Alonso’s faith in Wirtz mirrors his sentiments for Alexander-Arnold, as both players navigate the challenges of high-profile transfers. As the match at Anfield draws near, both players will be in the spotlight, each carrying their own narratives and the weight of their respective journeys. The atmosphere promises to be electric as Real Madrid faces Liverpool, setting the stage for what is sure to be a memorable encounter.
