Three young football enthusiasts from Marine Academy Plymouth had the opportunity of a lifetime when they participated in a squad photo with the Plymouth Argyle team at Home Park. The pupils, Sophie Hillebrandt, Riley Hoyle, and Thomas Clarke, were selected through the school’s ‘Make Their Day’ initiative, which recognizes students for their academic achievements and adherence to school values.

The initiative is supported by a partnership between Plymouth Argyle and motor retailer Vertu, which aims to strengthen community ties and enhance fan engagement. The students were thrilled to meet their football idols, with Sophie sitting next to her hero, Joe Edwards. Riley took the opportunity to shake hands with each player, while Thomas showcased his knowledge of the team’s performance, impressing both players and staff.

Robert Forrester, chief executive of Vertu, commented on the partnership’s significance, stating, “Moments like these show the real value of our partnership with Plymouth Argyle, which is about creating meaningful experiences for young people in the community and supporting grassroots participation in sport.” He further emphasized the company’s commitment to recognizing achievements, both academically and within their partnerships.

Building Confidence and Inspiration

Jennifer Brimming, principal of Marine Academy Plymouth, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity provided to the students. “This was a truly special moment for our students. To be invited to take part in something so unique, and to meet the players they admire, was incredibly powerful,” she said. Brimming highlighted the importance of such experiences in building confidence and inspiring ambition among students.

In addition, Keira Bassett, head of commercial at Plymouth Argyle, remarked on the alignment of values between the club and Vertu. She stated, “Whenever we work with partners, we are keen to align with businesses that match the values we live by every day.” Bassett acknowledged that initiatives like this enhance the community-focused ethos at Argyle, providing unforgettable experiences for individuals across Devon, Cornwall, and beyond.

The collaboration between Plymouth Argyle and Vertu Motors exemplifies the impact of community engagement in sports. By offering unique opportunities to young fans, the organizations not only foster a love for football but also contribute to the personal growth of students within their communities. As the young fans return to their studies, the memories of this extraordinary day will undoubtedly serve as motivation in their academic pursuits.
