Set It Off Unveils Personal New Album, Embracing Raw Emotion
The American rock band Set It Off has released their self-titled album, marking a significant chapter in their musical journey. Frontman Cody Carson describes this record as their most definitive and personal work to date, reflecting a blend of raw emotion and sonic evolution. The album, set to be available in March 2024, encapsulates the band’s experiences and transformations over their fifteen-year career.
Carson, known for his upbeat demeanor, reveals a contrasting side through this collection of songs that confront betrayal and frustration. He candidly shares, “I seem to attract people who are there to take advantage of kindness.” His lyrics echo a journey of disillusionment, where past naivety has hardened his perspective. This transformation is evident throughout the album, as Carson channels feelings of anger into creating music that resonates deeply with both the band and their audience.
In their pursuit of artistic independence, Set It Off has taken charge of their sound and vision. With a renewed sense of freedom, the band, including guitarist Zach DeWall and drummer Maxx Danziger, has crafted a cohesive collection that they feel embodies everything they represent. “We just knew that this one is the most us that we have ever been,” Carson affirms, emphasizing their commitment to authenticity.
A Shift in Sound and Style
The creative process for this album began unexpectedly when Carson booked studio time, initially intending to produce singles. However, the result was the standout track ‘Punching Bag,’ which was released in 2023. The song captures the essence of Carson’s emotional state and serves as a representation of the band’s evolution over the years.
Set It Off’s sound has matured, showcasing their heaviest and darkest tones yet. Tracks like ‘What’s In It For Me?’ and ‘Parasite’ exhibit a ferocity reminiscent of early 2000s rock, while still maintaining the band’s signature theatricality. Carson acknowledges the influence of various genres on their music, stating, “I feel like, because I truly enjoy all of those different genres on their own, that is why we have been able to do that ourselves.”
The band’s commitment to collaboration and individual expression is reflected in their approach to songwriting. Danziger’s desire for more intricate parts during the creation of their previous album, ‘Midnight’, led to a conscious effort to focus on the collective sound of Set It Off. Carson’s return to vocal techniques, including screaming, adds another layer of intensity to the music, showcasing his personal growth as an artist.
Lyrics that Resonate
The lyrical content of this new album dives into themes of conflict and catharsis, providing listeners with a means to process their own frustrations. Carson reflects on the impact of their previous work, particularly the song ‘Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing,’ which gained popularity through fan-created content online. He acknowledges the power of his words, noting, “When someone is singing your songs back with such ferocity and passion, you can tell that they are attaching it to something that is going on in their life.”
Through performances, Carson aims to create a collective experience for fans, allowing them to release pent-up emotions during live shows. He describes the therapeutic nature of their music, stating, “That’s why I write these songs; it’s the best therapy tool I have.” The band’s ability to connect with their audience through shared feelings of anger and disillusionment serves as a testament to their understanding of the human experience.
The album’s title, initially considered to be ‘Six,’ ultimately reflects the band’s identity. Carson explains, “Set It Off is more than a name; it is an intent, and that’s what these songs are.” The artwork accompanying the album symbolizes resilience, depicting a girl trapped beneath ice, signifying both struggle and the potential for liberation.
As Set It Off prepares for the next stage of their career, they appreciate their steady journey rather than a meteoric rise. Carson expresses gratitude for the gradual growth of their fanbase, stating, “From show to show, we are seeing that we have people who have been listening since day one and people who have just found us.”
With a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead, Carson concludes, “If we keep doing this, we will reach the place we have always dreamed of.” The release of this album not only marks a milestone for Set It Off but also promises to resonate with a new generation of listeners seeking authenticity and connection through music.
