Teacher Transitions to Construction, Thriving in New Role
Becky Willis, a former primary school teacher, has made a significant career change by joining the construction industry. Frustrated with the demands of teaching and the lack of engagement from students, the 31-year-old now works for Gateshead-based Tyneside Home Improvements (THI). Her decision reflects a broader trend as professionals seek more fulfilling careers outside traditional education roles.
After nearly a decade in teaching, including five years at international schools in the Middle East, Becky found the transition back to UK classrooms challenging. She faced increased workloads, a lack of student interest, and the instability of supply teaching. “I was passionate about teaching and did love it, but it had got to the point where I had no work-life balance,” she explained.
Becky’s journey into construction began when she assisted in THI’s office, where her partner works as a plasterer. Inspired by a conversation with Chris Green, the company’s commercial director, she decided to pursue an apprenticeship that allows her to work while studying for a degree in human resource management. She is now in the process of completing this degree, focusing on learning development, and writing her dissertation on the challenges apprentices face in the workplace.
Embracing Change and Mental Health Initiatives
Since joining THI, Becky has thrived in a male-dominated environment, becoming one of only six women among 28 staff members. Her role as a human resource business partner involves updating policies and implementing strategies to enhance workplace safety. Recently, she obtained certification as a mental health first aider, allowing her to support employees facing emotional challenges.
“Given we are a construction company, I didn’t think that many people would actually come and speak to me,” she remarked. Despite the stigma surrounding mental health in the industry, Becky has found that many employees are willing to engage in conversations. “It can be emotional, hearing what other people are going through, but it can be very rewarding to know I have helped,” she added.
In addition to her HR responsibilities, Becky has been recognized for her commitment to improving the workplace. This summer, she was nominated for the Degree Apprentice of the Year at the North East Apprenticeship Awards. Her achievements in just two years at THI illustrate her dedication to fostering a supportive and people-focused business culture.
A Bright Future for THI and its Employees
THI, which was founded 18 years ago by Kevin Kerr, has built a strong reputation for providing high-quality home improvements, including conservatories and garage conversions. This year, the firm won the award for Best Heritage Installer at the national Glass & Glazing Installer Awards 2025, further solidifying its status in the industry.
Becky’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. Chris Green praised her drive and commitment, stating, “Mentoring Becky has been a real privilege. Her drive, curiosity, and commitment to making a difference have been remarkable.” He emphasized that her work has helped shape a stronger, safer organization that prioritizes the well-being of its employees.
Reflecting on her journey, Becky noted, “My decision to join THI has completely transformed my life, and I haven’t looked back.” She now enjoys a better work-life balance, having evenings and weekends free, which allows her to pursue personal interests.
As she continues to develop her career in construction, Becky Willis serves as an inspiring example of how individuals can successfully transition into new fields, bringing valuable skills and a fresh perspective to their roles.
