A teacher in Auckland, New Zealand, has been charged with serious offenses after engaging in explicit communications with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The individual, who has been granted interim name suppression, faces charges of indecent communication with a minor and grooming a child for sexual purposes. The case highlights concerns regarding online safety and predatory behavior.

The teacher initiated contact with a person using the pseudonym ‘Mandy’ on Snapchat in July. During their conversations, he claimed to be 18 years old, while Mandy identified herself as 14. Despite knowing her age, he encouraged her to move their communication to another platform, stating that Snapchat was not “safe” and that he wanted to avoid trouble. Unbeknownst to him, Mandy was actually an undercover police officer, as reported by local news outlet Stuff.

Over the course of their exchanges, the teacher sent multiple suggestive messages, including one where he stated, “You seem really cute tho, I’d love to get to know you better xx.” He also requested photos from Mandy and sent her a naked photo of himself, claiming to be “thinking about you.” He made various offers, including inviting her to his home and suggesting they go for a drive in his campervan.

Throughout their conversations, the teacher bombarded Mandy with sexually explicit questions and made persistent attempts to meet in person. Despite her repeated assertions of being only 14, he continued to push boundaries, sending her a shocking four-second video of himself engaging in a sexual act. His messages included, “morning beautiful, how’s school today?” and offers to buy her gifts, stating, “whatever you want, baby.”

The situation escalated when Mandy expressed discomfort, describing her feelings as “awkward and shy.” Nevertheless, he continued to send explicit content, including another naked selfie and further videos of himself. The teacher’s actions eventually caught the attention of law enforcement.

In addition to the charges related to his communications with Mandy, it was revealed that the teacher had also engaged in an indecent act in his van at Cox’s Bay. Witnesses reported that he parked near two women who were camping and, after closing the curtains, was seen engaging in a sexual act. The women left the area and notified the police.

Following his arrest, the teacher chose not to comment on the allegations. The Teaching Council register indicates that he has voluntarily agreed to refrain from teaching during the proceedings. His request for permanent name suppression and the sentencing are scheduled for March 2024.
