British Man Dies After Cosmetic Procedures in Turkey, Family Mourns
The tragic death of a British man following cosmetic procedures in Turkey has drawn attention to the risks associated with medical tourism. Mentor Rama, aged 36, traveled to Istanbul for dental work and a hair transplant but fell ill shortly after returning to his hotel room. Emergency services were called, and Rama was taken to a nearby hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on November 11, 2023.
Rama’s family has expressed their profound sorrow through heartfelt tributes. A message shared on a family member’s public Facebook page conveyed their grief, stating, “Your departure has left a void that nothing in this world can fill.” The post, translated from Albanian, praised Rama as “the smile that warmed us,” reflecting the deep impact he had on his loved ones.
Following his death, Rama’s body was transferred to the Council of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul. Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing. A spokesperson for the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that they are in contact with local authorities and are supporting Rama’s family during this difficult time.
Turkey has become a popular destination for British nationals seeking affordable cosmetic procedures. It is estimated that at least 28 British nationals have died in Turkey after elective surgeries between March 2019 and March 2024, raising concerns about the safety of such medical tourism practices. Many clinics in Turkey offer so-called “medical tourism packages,” attracting patients with prices that can be 40 to 60 percent lower than similar procedures in the UK.
Despite the financial allure, numerous dental professionals have raised alarms about the potential complications associated with traveling abroad for cosmetic work. They advise caution, highlighting that the risks may not be worth the potential savings.
As Rama’s family navigates their loss, they remember him not only for his warmth and laughter but also as a reminder of the dangers that can accompany the pursuit of cosmetic enhancement abroad. The community mourns the loss of a life cut short and reflects on the broader implications of medical tourism.
