Man City Faces Defensive Dilemma as Nunes Shines at Right-Back
Manchester City is grappling with a defensive challenge as midfielder Matheus Nunes continues to excel in an unexpected right-back role. This shift became evident during the recent match at Estadio de la Ceramica, where Nunes’ performance highlighted a significant change in his position within the squad. While Nunes was initially signed for £53 million to strengthen City’s midfield, manager Pep Guardiola has repeatedly utilized him in defense, raising questions about his future role on the team.
Nunes has seen limited success in his intended midfield position, with only 27 of his 81 appearances coming in that role. His last start as a central midfielder was nearly a year ago, during a chaotic Champions League match against Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola previously noted Nunes’ lack of physicality for midfield play following last season’s Manchester derby, although he acknowledged the player’s vision and ability to contribute in attacking situations. After a standout performance in a 5-1 victory against Burnley, where Nunes scored one goal and assisted another, Guardiola reiterated his position on Nunes, emphasizing his attacking capabilities.
While Nunes has established himself as a primary option at right-back, Rico Lewis has been sidelined in this position. Lewis started in the first two matches of the current season but has since been primarily deployed in midfield. The competition for the right-back role intensified following Kyle Walker‘s transfer to Burnley, yet Nunes has taken the lead with six starts in this position compared to Lewis’ two.
Guardiola’s decision to favor Nunes reflects a strategic approach to maximize the player’s strengths. Against Villarreal, Nunes demonstrated his defensive acumen, successfully winning four of five duels and completing 97 of 99 passes. His ability to read the game and track opposing players has contributed significantly to City’s more solid defensive performance this season.
The potential return of Abdukodir Khusanov could further complicate Nunes’ position. Khusanov, who excelled in three consecutive matches against Manchester United, Napoli, and Arsenal before an injury, may reclaim his spot at right-back upon recovery. His pace offers a different dynamic that could challenge Nunes’ current status.
As Manchester City navigates this evolving situation, the performances of Nunes and other players will be crucial in shaping the team’s defensive strategy moving forward. With the looming competition for the right-back position, City fans will be watching closely to see how Guardiola addresses this dynamic in upcoming matches.
