Man Convicted of Attempted Rape After Morning Run Attack

A 41-year-old man has been found guilty of attempting to rape a young woman during her early-morning run in Eston. The attack occurred on July 17, 2023, when the victim was assaulted on Granwood Road. The quick response of local residents, who heard her screams, played a crucial role in detaining the attacker, Michael Wanless.

After knocking the victim to the ground, Wanless was pursued by neighbours who rushed from their homes to assist her. Their prompt actions led to his arrest by police shortly after the incident. According to a report from Teesside Live, the jury took only 35 minutes to reach a guilty verdict following a trial at Teesside Crown Court. Wanless had denied the charges against him.
