Manchester United Targets Ollie Watkins as Striker Option

Manchester United is actively seeking a new striker for the upcoming season, narrowing their options to two key targets: Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Red Bull Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. According to the Manchester Evening News, Watkins is the club’s preferred choice, given his established track record in the Premier League.
The challenge for United lies in Aston Villa’s likely demand for a substantial transfer fee. Villa had previously rejected a bid of approximately £60 million from Arsenal earlier this year, indicating their valuation of the talented England international. During his time with Villa, Watkins has netted 87 goals in 223 appearances and provided 42 assists. Prior to joining Villa, he scored 49 goals in 143 appearances for Brentford.
United’s recent transfer activity may also play a significant role in their pursuit of Watkins. Earlier this month, the club secured the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo for an initial fee of £65 million. Mbeumo had been with Brentford since 2019 and was part of a formidable attacking trio known locally as ‘BMW’, alongside Watkins. That season, Mbeumo scored 16 goals in the Championship, while Watkins tallied 25 goals in 46 appearances.
The prospect of reuniting with Mbeumo, a player with whom he has previously enjoyed success, could be a compelling factor for Watkins. Their established chemistry from their time at Brentford may facilitate a smoother transition should he make the move to Old Trafford.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Manchester United continues to evaluate their options to bolster their attacking lineup. The club remains committed to enhancing their squad, and the potential acquisition of a proven Premier League striker could significantly impact their performance in the forthcoming season.
