Mason Greenwood’s Value Soars: Manchester United Eyes Profit

Mason Greenwood’s market value has surged significantly since his departure from Manchester United, generating considerable interest as the summer transfer window remains open. Greenwood, who transferred to Getafe for £26.5 million in the summer of 2022, has impressed during his time at Marseille, where he has scored 22 goals and provided six assists in just 36 appearances. His performance helped Marseille secure a second-place finish in Ligue 1.
With the club set to compete in the UEFA Champions League this season, Greenwood will have an opportunity to shine on a prominent stage. The summer transfer window remains active until September 2, 2023, and speculation surrounding a potential move to Saudi Arabian clubs, including Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Nassr, persists. Although no concrete negotiations have emerged, the interest from these clubs could lead to a lucrative transfer.
Manchester United included a 50% sell-on clause in Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille, meaning they will benefit financially from any future sale. Reports from the French publication L’Équipe suggest that if Marseille sells Greenwood for €50 million (approximately £43.2 million), United would receive around £15 million from the transaction. The report further indicates that should Marseille sell Greenwood for that price, they would effectively recover the initial amount spent on him.
Greenwood’s market value has rebounded impressively since his suspension, now estimated at €40 million (about £34.6 million), exceeding the transfer fee Manchester United received just a year ago. The CIES Football Observatory, a respected sports analytics group, values Greenwood even higher, estimating him between €49 million and €57 million (approximately £42.3 million to £49.3 million).
The potential for a transfer before the Saudi window closes adds an intriguing layer to Greenwood’s situation. His age, performance, and the interest from abroad position him as a valuable asset within the current market.
As the football community continues to monitor Greenwood’s trajectory, Manchester United remains poised to capitalize on any financial gains stemming from his next steps. The club’s keen oversight of the situation reflects its interest in maximizing its investment in the young forward.
