New Shop Secures Alcohol Licence Despite Local Objections

A new convenience store in Wolverhampton has been granted an alcohol licence, despite objections from local residents who claimed it would be incompatible with the neighbourhood. The City of Wolverhampton Council’s licensing committee approved the licence for the **Mesha Essentials Convenience Store** located on **Rooker Avenue** during a hearing on **November 19, 2023**.

The committee’s decision followed concerns raised by neighbours, who described the shop as “unnecessary” and expressed fears that it could lead to increased anti-social behaviour. The objections highlighted worries about issues such as littering, vandalism, and noise, which residents believe could accompany the store’s late opening hours.

Local police initially objected to the application on the grounds that the store’s owner, **Mrs. Chrishanthan**, had not provided sufficient information on how the business would uphold licensing objectives, particularly regarding the prevention of crime and the protection of children. They argued that the proposed operating hours from **6 a.m. to 11 p.m.** Monday through Saturday, and until **9 p.m.** on Sundays were “considerably lengthy” without adequate supporting conditions.

Following discussions between Mrs. Chrishanthan, the council’s public health and environmental health departments, and the police, an agreement was reached that allowed the licence to be granted. Nonetheless, the hearing proceeded due to ongoing public objections.

During the hearing, the committee expressed disappointment that objectors did not attend to present their case. They characterized many of the concerns as speculative and lacking concrete evidence.

In her defence, Mrs. Chrishanthan stated, “We can make sure that we follow the **Challenge 25 policy** to ensure that alcohol is sold responsibly.” She emphasized her experience in managing alcohol sales, mentioning her work in a petrol station across from a pub, which has equipped her with knowledge on handling potential issues.

Mrs. Chrishanthan highlighted the importance of longer opening hours for those with irregular work schedules who require access to essential items. The licensing committee’s decision reflects a balance between local concerns and the need for convenience in the community.

As the store prepares to open, the focus will be on maintaining community standards while providing necessary services to residents. The approval of the licence underscores the ongoing dialogue between local businesses and communities regarding the impact of new establishments on neighbourhood dynamics.
