Rooftop Food Court Seeks Approval After Closure Over Safety Risks
A planning application has been submitted for the Rooftop Food Court in Walsall following its sudden closure last month due to safety concerns. The venue, which began operations earlier this year atop the Asda multi-storey car park on George Street, was shut down after Walsall Council determined that the activities posed an “immediate risk” to public safety.
The Rooftop Food Court quickly gained popularity, featuring street food from more than a dozen vendors, an outdoor cinema, and ample seating for up to 350 patrons. The venue also offered 400 parking spaces, making it a sought-after destination. However, Walsall Council issued a temporary stop notice to the owners, citing various safety issues.
Concerns and Transformation Efforts
In the retrospective planning application, the owner, Easy Park, noted that the site had previously suffered from vandalism, graffiti, rough sleepers, and drug paraphernalia. Easy Park emphasized that the underutilized rooftop had been successfully transformed into a vibrant, safe, and inclusive leisure space that supports the evening economy in Walsall.
The proposed development includes 16 modular food units, a courtyard area with seating, and a silent cinema. Enhancements such as soft lighting and planters are also part of the plan. Operating hours are proposed to be from 17:00 to 23:00. According to Easy Park, the initiative has already created over 100 jobs when considering vendors, cleaning, and security staff.
Although the site is located within the Church Hill Conservation Area, Easy Park argues that the car park’s utilitarian character means that the Rooftop Food Court does not negatively impact the protected zone.
Walsall Council is expected to make a decision regarding the planning application in January 2026. The outcome could determine the future of this unique venue that has already captured the interest of locals and visitors alike.
