Severe Snow and Ice Alerts Issued as UK Faces Arctic Blast

Residents across the United Kingdom are preparing for a significant drop in temperatures as an Arctic weather front is expected to bring severe snow and icy conditions. According to weather forecasts from WXCharts, temperatures could plunge to as low as -10°C in certain areas within hours. The onset of this wintry weather is anticipated to begin around 3:00 AM on November 18, 2023, starting in Scotland and progressing southward throughout the day.

By 6:00 AM, cities such as Glasgow, Perth, Dundee, and Edinburgh are likely to experience snowfall. As the morning progresses, snow showers will move across the country, impacting regions including Newcastle and York by 9:00 AM. The weather maps indicate that even areas around Birmingham, Manchester, and Stoke-on-Trent may receive light snow, with temperatures hovering between -1°C and 0°C.

Weather Warnings and Health Alerts

The UK Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings for snow and ice, effective from 5:00 AM on Tuesday until midday, with predictions that the wintry conditions may persist through Thursday. Tom Crabtree, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, stated, “Wednesday to Friday will be the coldest part of the week, and this period has the greatest potential for impactful weather, with multiple warnings in place.” He emphasized that overnight temperatures could reach -10°C, with a significant wind chill making it feel even colder.

Snow accumulations are likely, particularly in northern and eastern regions, where low-lying areas may see between 2-5 cm of snow. Higher elevations, especially in parts of Northern Ireland, the northeast of England, and Scotland, could experience 5-10 cm of snow, with accumulations of up to 15-20 cm possible above 300 meters.

In conjunction with the weather warnings, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber Cold-Health Alert covering regions including Yorkshire & Humber, North West, and North East England. The remaining regions are under a yellow alert from 12:00 PM on Monday until 8:00 AM on Saturday. Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, cautioned, “This is the first prolonged cold spell of the season, and it is therefore vital to check in on friends, family, and neighbours who are most vulnerable.”

Dr. Sousa added that the forecasted temperatures could pose serious health risks, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. Increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections are a concern as temperatures drop significantly.
