A regional passenger train derailed in a wooded area of southwestern Germany on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuring several others. The accident occurred around 18:10 local time near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Württemberg state, where approximately 100 passengers were onboard.

Initial reports from the police indicated that four fatalities had occurred, but this was later revised to three confirmed deaths. Authorities have not disclosed the total number of injuries or the severity of those affected. The German rail operator Deutsche Bahn acknowledged the incident, confirming multiple fatalities and numerous injuries. Two carriages of the train derailed, with the cause still under investigation.

As investigations continue, traffic on a 40-kilometre (25-mile) stretch of the route has been suspended. Local media have suggested that a landslide, triggered by severe storms in the region, may have contributed to the derailment. The train was en route from Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when the incident occurred in a forested area.

In response to the tragedy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He stated that he was in close communication with the interior and transport ministers, urging them to ensure that emergency services receive all necessary support.

Images from the scene show the train’s yellow-and-grey carriages lying on their sides, while firefighters and emergency responders worked to assist the passengers. Local television station SWR reported that helicopters arrived shortly after the incident to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, and emergency medical teams were dispatched from surrounding facilities.

Germany’s railway system has faced ongoing criticism from passengers regarding its outdated infrastructure, with frequent delays and technical issues. The government has pledged to invest several hundred billion euros in the coming years to modernize the rail network. This recent derailment echoes a previous incident in June 2022 near a Bavarian Alpine resort, which resulted in four fatalities and numerous injuries.

Germany’s deadliest train accident occurred in 1998, when a high-speed train operated by Deutsche Bahn derailed in Eschede, Lower Saxony, claiming the lives of 101 people. The latest tragedy underscores ongoing concerns regarding rail safety and infrastructure in the country.
