UK Workers Spend Nine Months Traveling for Business Over Careers
A recent survey has revealed that workers in the UK spend an astonishing nine months of their careers on work-related travel. Conducted among 2,000 individuals who commute and travel for business, the findings highlight the extensive time employees dedicate to reaching their workplaces and fulfilling job obligations.
The survey indicates that the average worker spends over 52 minutes each day commuting, which translates to nearly 155 hours annually—equivalent to about 19 working days. In addition, individuals also allocate an average of 84 minutes monthly for other work-related travel, culminating in a staggering total of nine months spent away from home over a full-time career from ages 18 to 65.
Many individuals express a strong dislike for commuting and business travel. The research found that 43% of respondents view these travel commitments as some of the most frustrating aspects of their jobs. Consequently, 30% of participants indicated they would prefer to book a nearby hotel instead of enduring long commutes.
For those who occasionally travel for work, the impact on personal life is significant. Among the 64% of respondents who stay away from home for business, the average time spent away is approximately 28 days each year, resulting in missed opportunities to connect with family and friends.
Nick Jacobs, Sales Director at Travelodge, which commissioned the survey, noted, “Many people spend a significant part of their lives away from home for work, often missing the comfort and familiarity of their own space.” He emphasized the benefits of staying close to work sites, stating that it allows for better rest and more time in the mornings.
The survey also uncovered that 29% of business travelers must spend nights away from home at least once a month. When choosing accommodation, 76% of respondents prioritize hotels, with 52% selecting based on location, 42% focusing on comfort, and 28% considering cost. Despite these preferences, a significant number of individuals are deterred by the long hours associated with overnight trips, with 31% expressing dislike for disruption to their routine.
On a more positive note, 30% of those who travel for work appreciate the extra time to themselves, and 22% report feeling more productive while away. Interestingly, 21% believe they sleep better during business trips, and 17% enjoy the break from household chores.
Jacobs commented further on the dual nature of work travel, saying, “Staying away from home is bound to have its pros and cons. We know people value the quiet space and comfort that a hotel room provides, and while it’s natural to miss family during work trips, having some personal time to relax, focus or unwind can be a real benefit.”
As this research illustrates, the time dedicated to commuting and business travel is substantial, underscoring the need for employers to consider the work-life balance of their employees. The findings serve as a reminder that while travel can facilitate productivity, it often comes at the cost of personal time and comfort.
