Washington Shooting Leaves National Guard Soldiers in Doubt
A shooting incident near the White House in Washington D.C. has raised serious concerns regarding the condition of two National Guard soldiers. Initial reports indicated that both soldiers had died; however, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey later retracted this statement, citing conflicting information about their status. He expressed his support for the soldiers and their families, stating, “Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.”
Following the shooting, which occurred on November 26, the White House was placed on lockdown. Law enforcement officials reported that one suspect was taken into custody and had sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Emergency services responded promptly, with helicopters landing on the National Mall to assist in the situation. All three individuals involved were transported to a local hospital, according to Vito Maggiolo, the public information officer for Washington D.C. fire and emergency services.
During the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was in Florida. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed he has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring developments. Local officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, are also actively tracking the situation. Bowser had attended a Thanksgiving event earlier in the day before holding a press conference announcing her decision not to seek re-election.
The shooting took place at the intersection of 17th and H Streets in the northwest quadrant of the city. The Joint D.C. Task Force and the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, where police tape cordoned off the area amid flashing lights from emergency vehicles and the thudding of helicopter blades overhead. Agents from the U.S. Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were present, as National Guard troops stood guard nearby.
In a statement on social media, Trump condemned the shooter as an “animal” and vowed that they “will pay a very steep price.” He further stated, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People,” emphasizing his support for the troops involved.
The presence of the National Guard in Washington D.C. has been contentious in recent months, sparking debates about the military’s role in addressing public safety issues. As authorities continue to gather information, the community remains on high alert, awaiting further updates regarding the soldiers’ conditions and the investigation into the shooting.
