The festive spirit officially descended upon Newcastle on November 5, 2023, with the unveiling of this year’s Fenwick’s Christmas Window. Families and invited guests gathered to witness the enchanting display, which has become a cherished tradition in the heart of the city. With its roots dating back to the early 1970s, Fenwick’s Window has captivated audiences with themes from classic stories, including The Snowman, Beatrix Potter, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The launch event saw Northumberland Street closed off, allowing only those within the designated area to experience the unveiling live. For those outside, the moment was streamed on Fenwick’s official YouTube channel. The evening featured a lively entertainment segment, complete with actors and dancers, culminating in a countdown led by Santa Claus himself. As the curtain fell, the display was revealed: a series of scenes inspired by Charles Dickens‘ timeless tale, A Christmas Carol.

Bringing Dickens to Life

The window display, designed by author and illustrator Chris Riddell, immerses viewers in the Victorian world of Dickens’ narrative. It follows the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge, a character known for his disdain for Christmas, who undergoes a transformative experience through encounters with three spectral visitors. These ghosts guide him towards understanding compassion, generosity, and the essence of the holiday spirit.

Riddell expressed his excitement about returning for a second year, stating, “I was thrilled to be asked to produce designs for Fenwick’s Christmas windows again this year. The theme of A Christmas Carol was so rich and resonant with the ghosts and Scrooge and a host of Dickensian characters, I couldn’t resist the challenge.” He praised the team responsible for transforming his drawings into stunning three-dimensional tableaux, adding that he eagerly awaited the public’s reaction.

A Cherished Tradition

Fenwick’s Christmas Window will remain on display until early January 2024, officially opening to the public on November 6. It is a highlight of the festive season in Newcastle, attracting visitors from near and far who seek to experience the magic of the display. The window has become synonymous with the holiday spirit, drawing families and tourists alike to witness its charm.

As the holiday season approaches, Fenwick’s Window stands as a reminder of the joy and wonder that the festive period brings. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and enjoy this visual feast that celebrates the enduring legacy of Dickens’ work and the spirit of Christmas.
