Bremen’s Marble Imaging Secures €5.3M for Revolutionary Satellites

Marble Imaging, a startup based in Bremen, Germany, has successfully raised €5.3 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round. This investment, led by High-Tech Gründerfonds, will enable the company to develop a fleet of multispectral satellites designed to provide high-resolution Earth observation data as frequently as every hour. The funding will support the scaling of their team and technology, as well as the launch of their first satellite planned for 2026.

The need for independent, timely, and very high-resolution Earth observation (EO) data is becoming increasingly urgent. Demand is soaring across various sectors, including defense, climate monitoring, disaster response, energy transitions, and infrastructure projects. Current satellite offerings often fail to meet the speed and sovereignty required for critical decision-making. Marble Imaging aims to address this gap by establishing a comprehensive EO data service ecosystem.

The startup’s founding team includes Robert Hook (CEO), Dr. Gopika Suresh (CSO), and Alexander Epp (CBDO), who collectively bring over a decade of experience in space systems and satellite data processing. Hook has previously led significant European EO programs, including the Copernicus CO2M mission. Their vision is to deliver rapid, reliable, and independent very high-resolution EO data, enhancing decision-making capabilities for security and environmental management.

Innovative Satellite Technology

Marble Imaging’s approach revolves around the development of small satellites equipped with advanced multispectral cameras. These cameras capture data across visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared spectrums, allowing for sharp and frequent imagery. The company distinguishes itself with custom artificial intelligence analytics tailored for critical applications such as terrain and traffic analysis, asset monitoring, and land cover classification.

The design of Marble’s satellites supports dual-use applications, catering to both civilian and defense sectors. Unlike major players such as Maxar Technologies, which offers expensive large satellites, or Planet Labs, which provides lower-resolution data, Marble focuses on European control and rapid revisit rates. This strategy is aimed at meeting urgent needs within Europe.

Additionally, Marble Imaging has secured over €10 million in non-dilutive funding and signed a €3 million anchor contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Marble Imaging plans to expand its satellite constellation to as many as 20 satellites by 2028. This expansion is expected to facilitate faster revisit rates and provide near-hourly insights for clients in defense, climate monitoring, and crisis response. The company is already offering services that include object detection for intelligence purposes and analysis of terrain and trafficability.
