Survey Reveals One in Six Brits Prefer Unwrapped Christmas Gifts
Research indicates that a significant number of British adults are open to the idea of forgoing traditional gift wrapping during the holiday season. A recent survey of 2,000 adults found that one in six participants believes there is nothing wrong with presenting Christmas gifts without any wrapping.
The survey highlighted a notable generational divide, with 20% of Gen Z and Millennials considering unwrapped gifts perfectly acceptable. In contrast, only 8% of respondents aged 61 to 79 share this sentiment. Furthermore, men appear to be more inclined than women to give gifts without wrapping, with 19% of men admitting to this practice compared to 10% of women.
Shifting Attitudes Towards Gift-Giving
The study, commissioned by DFS, coincided with the launch of its Guaranteed Christmas Delivery service for a wide selection of products. To celebrate the initiative, every sofa displayed in its Derby branch was wrapped as part of a promotional event, which also featured a competition allowing ten lucky shoppers to win their sofa free of charge.
Kellie Wyles, spokesperson for DFS, remarked, “Christmas is a time of celebration, but never-ending to-do lists ahead of the big day can often contribute to the heightened emotion.” She emphasized that the new delivery service aims to alleviate some of the stress associated with holiday preparations.
The survey results also revealed that a substantial 29% of respondents dislike wrapping presents altogether. Additionally, 79% reported challenges in selecting gifts for specific individuals, with partners proving the most difficult to shop for, followed by parents and children. As a result, many individuals procrastinate, with 16% admitting to purchasing gifts on Christmas Eve. Despite this, 21% of these last-minute shoppers claim that the thrill of last-minute buying enhances their holiday spirit.
Early Preparations and Shopping Trends
Despite the procrastination, a majority of respondents—62%%—prefer to organize their holiday shopping well in advance of December 25. Interestingly, 27% start their preparations as early as November. Over half of those surveyed, 51%, begin their shopping early to manage expenses effectively, with more than a quarter, 27%, viewing Black Friday as a prime opportunity for deals.
The survey also revealed that holiday preparations extend beyond gift wrapping. Half of the respondents engage in tidying or deep cleaning before the festive period, while 24% rearrange furniture to accommodate guests. Additionally, 20% have considered purchasing new furniture, with soft furnishings, sofas, and dining tables being the most sought-after items.
Wyles added, “Whether you’re a meticulous wrapper or more of a last-minute gifter, our research shows that everyone approaches Christmas differently.” She expressed that DFS aims to assist customers in relieving some of the pressures of the holiday season, whether through timely delivery of new furniture or by providing inspiration from their festive preparation guide.
