George Clooney Reveals Dark Truths About 80s Party Scene
In a revealing interview, actor and director George Clooney shared candid insights about the chaotic drug culture of the 1980s Hollywood party scene. Clooney, now 64, recounted his experiences during a time when cocaine was not only prevalent but often mixed with dangerous additives, including baby laxative. This admission sheds light on the tumultuous journey of an aspiring actor navigating fame and excess.
Clooney’s rise to fame began with his role in the television series ER, but before that, he spent years in Los Angeles trying to make a name for himself. He described the early 1980s as a confusing and decadent era, filled with small roles in forgettable television shows and rampant drug use. Cocaine was glamorised in popular culture, often depicted as a harmless accessory to the high life.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Clooney admitted to experimenting with cocaine in 1982. He downplayed the severity of his actions, stating, “I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all.” This perspective was widely shared among his peers, who often viewed cocaine as less dangerous than other narcotics. Clooney recalled how the industry was rife with denial about the true nature of drug use during that period.
As Clooney delved deeper into his past, he revealed a shocking detail about the cocaine circulating in his circles: it was frequently cut with mannitol, a substance commonly used as a baby laxative. “Everybody would do a line and then take a*s,” he noted, highlighting the absurd lengths to which partygoers would go to chase a fleeting high. This revelation provides a stark reminder of the lack of regulation in the drug trade and the health hazards associated with such practices.
While Clooney insisted that cocaine was never a significant problem for him, he acknowledged his past experiences with getting “high.” He recalled a time approximately 15 years ago when he consumed marijuana-laced brownies, an experience he described with a sense of humour. “I was high school drunk. Like dumba*s drunk,” he said, illustrating how the effects of substances could lead to unexpected consequences.
Clooney’s frankness extended beyond narcotics to his relationship with alcohol. He shared a humorous anecdote about a time when he felt devastated after not receiving awards for his Broadway play, Good Night, and Good Luck. Following the disappointment, he indulged in a drinking binge, reflecting on the experience with self-deprecation. “I caught up for all my abstinence in one night,” he recalled, further humanising the Hollywood star.
This candid glimpse into George Clooney’s past serves as a reminder that even the most glamorous figures are shaped by their experiences. Despite his current life of luxury, splitting time between his villa in Lake Como and his estate in Berkshire, Clooney remains grounded by the realities of his journey. His revelations not only provide insight into the challenges faced by young actors but also highlight the ongoing conversation about the impact of substance use in the entertainment industry.
