Experts Warn Against Two Common Remedies for Sore Throat Relief
As the colder months approach, sore throats are becoming increasingly common, prompting many individuals to seek relief. However, health experts are cautioning against two widely used remedies that may not provide the benefits many expect. According to consumer advocacy organization Which?, certain products marketed for sore throat relief may be unnecessary and ineffective.
In an assessment of popular treatments, Professor Nirmal Kumar, a consultant ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon and former president of ENT UK, emphasized that simpler, home-based alternatives can often alleviate symptoms just as effectively. He stated, “You don’t have to go and buy expensive remedies when a few simple things you can do at home can help to relieve symptoms.”
One common approach is the use of medicated lozenges, which are readily available at pharmacies and stores. However, experts suggest that “any old hard sweet and a painkiller will also do the trick.” Another frequently chosen remedy is antiseptic sprays. Yet, the NHS notes that “there’s little proof they help when used on their own.”
Effective Alternatives for Sore Throat Relief
For those seeking effective ways to manage sore throat discomfort, several alternatives are recommended. Which? suggests the following methods, supported by health authorities:
1. **Gargling with warm, salty water**: This method, endorsed by the NHS, can soothe a sore throat and potentially shorten its duration. Mixing half a teaspoon of salt in 150 milliliters of warm water and gargling for 30 seconds, three times a day, is advised. However, this remedy is not suitable for children.
2. **Pain relief medications**: Professor Kumar recommends using paracetamol or ibuprofen, stating, “These will reduce the soreness and feeling of illness.” Generic or budget versions of these painkillers can provide the same relief as more expensive branded options, which may cost nearly five times as much.
3. **Sweets and ice cream**: Surprisingly, you don’t need specialized throat sweets. Simply sucking on any hard sweet can stimulate saliva production, adding moisture to the throat. Cold items, such as ice cubes or ice lollies, can numb the pain, while ice cream serves a dual purpose of providing comfort and lubrication.
4. **Honey and lemon drink**: This popular remedy not only offers soothing benefits but can also lubricate a scratchy throat. The NHS advises drinking plenty of fluids, although hot drinks may worsen pain, so opting for warm beverages is preferable.
While most sore throats tend to improve on their own within a week, it is crucial to monitor symptoms. If discomfort persists or worsens, individuals should consult their general practitioner (GP). Which? notes that if a sore throat is due to a viral infection, the focus should be on managing symptoms rather than seeking to eliminate the virus directly.
When to Seek Medical Advice
The NHS recommends seeing a GP under specific circumstances, including:
– If a child under five years old requires assistance for a sore throat.
– If the sore throat does not improve after one week.
– If there is a history of frequent sore throats.
– If symptoms accompany a lump in the mouth or neck, or if a mouth ulcer lasts longer than three weeks.
Practicing good hygiene is essential for minimizing the risk of sore throats. Regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose, is advised. When soap and water are unavailable, using a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol is a suitable alternative. Additionally, covering the mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and disposing of the tissue immediately can help prevent the spread of infections.
By taking these precautions and considering more effective remedies, individuals can navigate the discomfort of sore throats this season with greater ease and confidence.
