Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska: Body Language Signals Power Dynamics

In a significant diplomatic encounter, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met for crucial discussions in Anchorage, Alaska, where their initial greeting included a warm embrace and smiles. Despite the apparent camaraderie, an expert suggests that Trump employed a strategic gesture that could indicate a desire to establish dominance in their negotiations.

During their meeting, which took place on the evening of March 15, 2024, the two leaders were seen embracing on a red carpet just a short distance from their aircraft. Trump welcomed Putin into “The Beast,” his Presidential limousine, typically reserved for US officials, while US jets flew overhead in a show of unity.

A body language analyst, Darren Stanton, observed that although their greeting appeared friendly, Trump’s choice of handshake was notably less aggressive than usual. Stanton remarked that Trump opted for a “hand tap” instead of his characteristic “bone-crusher handshake,” which is known for its forcefulness. He described this change as a “condescending gesture,” suggesting it was meant to convey a sense of superiority.

Stanton explained, “When they shook hands, Trump didn’t pull Putin towards him as he typically does. Instead, the hand tap serves as a power gesture, subtly indicating who is in command.” This technique, he noted, aligns with Trump’s previous approach during encounters with leaders such as the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, where he employed a gentler handshake.

In Stanton’s analysis, this adjustment in approach seemed to position Trump as the “stronger personality” in the meeting. He noted, “Both men appear to have mutual respect and are genuinely pleased to engage in these talks.”

Russian media outlets, particularly state-aligned RIA Novosti, highlighted the positive reception Putin received from Trump, with one anchor noting that the US President appeared “extremely friendly.” The outlet emphasized what it termed a “historic handshake” and reported that the Trump administration might be ready to offer Russia certain concessions.

In an interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that some sanctions against Russia could be lifted, stating, “They will definitely be lifted for some, that’s for sure.” This statement adds further context to the potential outcomes of the summit, suggesting that discussions may lead to significant diplomatic shifts.

As the leaders continue their negotiations, the dynamics of their meeting in Alaska will likely play a crucial role in shaping future relations between the United States and Russia, particularly in light of ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine.
