UN Experts Accuse Israel of Genocide in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

A team of independent experts commissioned by the United Nations’ Human Rights Council has delivered a report asserting that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. This conclusion follows the ongoing conflict that has escalated since the deadly attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant loss of life, with tens of thousands reported killed.

The Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, formed four years ago, has documented numerous alleged human rights violations during the conflict. While the commission cannot enforce actions against countries, its findings may influence proceedings at the International Criminal Court or the UN’s International Court of Justice.

Report Findings and Reactions

The report represents a critical communication from the commission, led by Navi Pillay, a former UN rights chief. While Volker Turk, the current UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza, he has refrained from labeling the situation as genocide. His office maintains that only an international court has the authority to make a formal determination regarding genocide.
