Belarus and Iran Solidify Ties with 12 New Cooperation Agreements
During an official visit to Minsk on March 15, 2023, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed twelve cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. This agreement comes as both nations seek to enhance their partnership in the face of ongoing U.S. sanctions.
The signed agreements cover a broad range of sectors, including politics, international law, health, pharmaceuticals, industry, environment, tourism, art, media, and investment. The leaders expressed that these documents would serve as a foundation for long-term collaboration between the two countries.
Pezeshkian characterized his visit as a significant moment in the history of Iran-Belarus relations, stating, “Relations with Belarus are being pursued at the highest possible level.” He emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no limitations on enhancing its partnership with Belarus and underscored the commitment to fully implement the cooperation roadmap for 2023–2026.
Practical measures discussed during the visit include joint investments, enhanced customs cooperation, and increased transit of goods and passengers. Pezeshkian also called for a boost in media and cultural exchanges to foster a more accurate representation of both nations.
At a joint press conference, Pezeshkian voiced strong criticism of the United States and its European allies, claiming they attempt to impose their views on other countries. He stated, “Such an approach has not been and will not be tolerable by you and us.” He further articulated that Iran and Belarus could successfully navigate sanctions through serious collaboration.
The Iranian President expressed gratitude towards Minsk for its support against what he termed the “aggressive attacks of the Zionist regime and the United States” on Iranian territory and nuclear facilities, labeling these actions as violations of international law and the UN Charter.
In response, Lukashenko praised Iran as a dependable partner, indicating a willingness to discuss a wide array of topics to elevate their relationship. He also requested that Pezeshkian convey his regards to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Both leaders recognized the importance of multilateral organizations, including the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and BRICS, as platforms to broaden their cooperation outside of Western-led frameworks.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the agreements between Belarus and Iran underscore a strategic alliance that prioritizes mutual interests and defies external pressures.
