Expert Vet Answers Common Pet Behavioral Questions

Pet owners often encounter a variety of challenges with their animals, from barking dogs to inappropriate urination by cats. Sean McCormack, head vet at the tailored pet food company tails.com, has been addressing these concerns for a decade. He offers solutions to some common pet behavior issues raised by readers.

Addressing Dog Barking at Night

A Cardiff resident, Sarah Matthews, expressed frustration regarding her two-year-old cavapoo, Milo, who barks incessantly during the night. Despite various attempts to soothe him, including night lights and music, Milo remains restless.

McCormack suggests that by going downstairs to sleep with Milo, Matthews inadvertently reinforces his need for companionship. He advises a “tough-love” approach, encouraging her to allow Milo to learn that he can sleep alone. “If you give in once, he’ll double his efforts next time,” states McCormack. He also recommends consulting a behaviorist if the problem persists.

Neutering Cats to Combat Spraying

Another reader, Sue Wilson from Sleaford, also sought help for her two seven-month-old male Maine Coon cats, Casper and Ziggy. One cat has developed a habit of spraying within the house.

According to McCormack, this behavior is driven by hormones and is common among unneutered males. He strongly recommends neutering as a solution, which should help resolve the issue within weeks. In the meantime, he advises cleaning any soiled areas thoroughly with an ammonia-free solution to prevent the behavior from continuing.

Behavioral Issues in Dogs and Cats

In Kilmarnock, James Corrigan reported that his bichon frise, Theo, is obsessively licking one of his paws. While there are no signs of injury, McCormack suggests this could be a behavioral issue. He explains that dogs may lick for comfort or boredom, and if it becomes compulsive, it could lead to skin lesions. A veterinary examination may be necessary to determine the best course of action, including possible medication to alleviate discomfort.

Meanwhile, Maureen Anderson from Cambridge shared her experience with her five-year-old ginger tom cat, Wispa, who occasionally bites or swipes at her while sitting on her lap. McCormack attributes this behavior to Wispa’s early experiences with humans, suggesting it may not completely resolve. He highlights the importance of understanding that such behaviors can stem from past traumas or misunderstandings about play.

Campaign for Pet Liability Insurance

In other news, a new campaign called “Murphy’s Law” is gaining traction, calling for mandatory liability insurance for dog owners. This initiative arises from an increase in dog attacks reported by police across the UK. Joanne Newbury, who lost her ten-year-old cockapoo, Murphy, after an attack by an uninsured dog, is advocating for this change. She hopes to prevent future tragedies, stating, “Murphy was everything to me. I want to make sure this never happens to another family.”

As of now, over 4,000 pet owners have signed a petition supporting this cause on the site change.org.

Highlighting the Bond Between Pets and Owners

In a heartwarming story, Ziggy, an eleven-year-old miniature schnauzer, is recognized for his protective nature over one-year-old Sylvie Harvey. According to Sylvie’s mother, Amy, Ziggy has been a devoted companion from birth, alerting her when Sylvie is upset and providing comfort during difficult moments. Amy describes Ziggy as “like a doting uncle,” showcasing the profound bond that can exist between pets and their human families.

For those looking to improve their pets’ health, Pooch & Mutt is offering gut health tests valued at £69.99. These tests can help identify potential dietary issues affecting dogs. Interested owners can enter a competition for a chance to win one of four tests by emailing Pooch & Mutt by August 21.

Whether addressing behavioral problems or celebrating the special bonds between pets and their owners, understanding animal behavior remains crucial for fostering happy and healthy relationships.
