Welsh Coffee Chain Coffi Lab Expands with New Cardiff Location

The popular Welsh coffee chain Coffi Lab is set to open its 12th location in the vibrant suburb of Pontcanna in Cardiff. The new shop will occupy the former site of The Bike Shed on Cathedral Road, which closed its doors in summer 2023 after two decades of operation. This expansion is expected to further cement Coffi Lab’s presence in Wales and the south-west of England.

Founded in 2021 by James Shapland, Coffi Lab has quickly gained popularity for its dog-friendly atmosphere and high-quality coffee. Since its inception, the chain has expanded to include locations in Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Monmouth, and Abergavenny, as well as branches in Thornbury, Marlborough, and Bristol. The new shop is anticipated to open in early 2024, although an exact date has yet to be confirmed.

A Tribute to Inspiration

The opening of the Pontcanna store holds special significance for Shapland, as it is dedicated to his beloved dog Dylan, whose warmth and joy inspired the creation of Coffi Lab. The chain’s announcement highlighted this personal connection, stating, “In tribute to our beautiful boy behind it all, this is Dylan’s Lab.” The location is intended to be a cozy gathering spot for dog owners and coffee lovers alike.

Shapland originally envisioned Pontcanna as the first Coffi Lab location, though the Landaff branch on High Street was established first. In a heartfelt message, the company expressed its excitement about returning to the envisioned neighborhood, noting, “Pontcanna was always meant to be our first Lab, and it means so much to be opening in our special home neighbourhood.”

As work progresses on the new store, Coffi Lab aims to create a welcoming space for both customers and their pets. The establishment plans to offer a selection of freshly roasted coffee, baked goods, and a relaxed environment for socializing. The company’s team, including baristas and bakers, is enthusiastic about welcoming patrons to the new location.
