Portsmouth’s Young Striker Shines on Loan While First Team Struggles

Portsmouth FC is grappling with a significant scoring drought, having netted just 15 goals in their 19 Championship matches this season. This places them as the joint-lowest scorers in the league, alongside Sheffield Wednesday. Despite this alarming statistic, one member of the squad, Tayo Singerr, has been making headlines elsewhere, finding success on loan at Moneyfields.

Singerr, a highly-rated striker, has scored 13 goals in just 18 matches since joining Moneyfields in August. His performance has been impressive, particularly as he also scored during his debut for Portsmouth in a Carabao Cup match against Reading. Currently, he holds a goal tally equal to that of Pompey’s leading scorer, Colby Bishop, despite spending much of the season away from Fratton Park.

Loan Success Amid First-Team Challenges

Playing in the Isthmian League South Central Division has provided Singerr with valuable experience, showcasing his talent in front of smaller crowds compared to the 20,388 supporters at Fratton Park. In his time at Moneyfields, he has played a crucial role in their strong performance, helping the team secure second place in their league, just three points behind leaders Leatherhead.

While Singerr continues to excel, Portsmouth’s head coach, John Mousinho, has indicated that the young striker is not yet ready to join the first team. In a recent statement, Mousinho acknowledged Singerr’s impressive goal-scoring record, stating, “Tayo’s had a pretty good season and scored a lot of goals, which is the most important thing for a centre-forward.”

Mousinho emphasized the importance of Singerr’s development, noting, “If we thought Tayo was ready, we’d call him up and have him with the first team. But at the minute, he’s doing well where he is.” The coach highlighted Singerr’s strong movement and ability to hold up the ball, essential skills for a forward.

Portsmouth’s Ongoing Goal Struggles

Portsmouth’s struggles in front of goal have reached a critical point. Since Jordan Williams scored in the 89th minute against Millwall, the team has gone 271 minutes without finding the net. Their current tally of 15 goals leaves them with a pressing need for offensive reinforcements, especially as they look to turn their season around.

Despite Singerr’s success on loan, Mousinho has opted not to bring him back, citing the ongoing development needed for the young player and the addition of other forwards in the squad. “He has shown a lot of promise for someone so young,” Mousinho added, reinforcing his commitment to nurturing talent rather than rushing players into the first team.

Singerr’s contributions at Moneyfields have not gone unnoticed. He was recently recognized by League Football Education as one of the 11 players nationwide producing outstanding efforts both on and off the pitch. As Portsmouth looks to solve its scoring issues, all eyes will be on the club’s strategy for integrating young talent like Singerr into their future plans.
