Oreo Launches Zero Sugar Cookies After Four-Year Development
Oreo is set to enter the sugar-free market with the launch of its first-ever **Zero Sugar Cookies**. After investing four years in development, the iconic cookie brand will introduce these new treats in the **United States** in **January 2026**. The announcement was made by **Mondelez International** on **December 9, 2023**, confirming that the Zero Sugar Cookies will become a permanent addition to the Oreo lineup.
The Zero Sugar Cookies come in both regular and Double Stuf varieties, featuring a redesigned wafer with “Zero Sugar” stamped directly onto the chocolate. This marks the first significant aesthetic change for Oreo in several years. The new recipe is crafted to maintain the classic Oreo taste, a priority for Mondelez during its extensive development phase.
According to **USA Today**, Mondelez has dedicated considerable effort to perfecting the formula to ensure that the sugar-free cookies do not compromise on flavor. The company aims to provide a product that offers “indulgence without sugar,” steering clear of the typical taste associated with diet cookies.
Innovative Ingredients and Packaging Changes
The new Zero Sugar formulation avoids the use of **aspartame**, opting instead for a combination of **maltitol**, **polydextrose**, **sucralose**, and **acesulfame potassium** to achieve sweetness. Each cookie contains approximately **45 calories**, compared to around **53 calories** for a standard Oreo. This slight reduction aims to appeal to consumers who enjoy the classic cookie experience without the added sugar.
In a further shift, the packaging for Zero Sugar Oreos will transition from the traditional plastic tray to a resealable stand-up pouch. This new design is intended to enhance convenience and freshness for consumers.
Early availability of the cookies is already accessible on Oreo’s website, where a bag of **20 cookies** can be purchased for **$5.29**. This pre-launch strategy allows enthusiasts to experience the new flavor before the broader rollout in January.
Oreo’s Experimental Trends
Oreo has increasingly ventured into innovative flavors and collaborations in recent years. In **2024**, the brand notably partnered with **Coca-Cola** to create a unique product line that included **Coke-flavored Oreos** and **Oreo-inspired soda**. More recently, the brand introduced a Thanksgiving-themed collection featuring flavors such as **Pumpkin Pie**, **Cranberry Sauce**, and even **Turkey & Stuffing**.
The introduction of Zero Sugar Oreos represents a significant evolution for the brand as it aims to capture a new segment of the cookie market. Mondelez is optimistic that this sugar-free option, while retaining the “real Oreo taste,” will carve out a distinct niche in the cookie aisle, appealing to health-conscious consumers without sacrificing flavor.
