Family Fights for Recovery After Rare Cyst Causes Catastrophic Stroke
A woman in Dubai is navigating the challenges of grief and hope after her husband suffered a catastrophic stroke caused by a rare brain cyst. Natasha Demetriou, 33, described her husband, Assem Elshaer, 36, as “incredibly intelligent” and “the life of the party.” Their lives changed dramatically on November 22, 2024, when Assem began complaining of severe headaches, leading to the discovery of a ruptured dermoid cyst in his brain.
The couple, who have a three-year-old daughter named Athena, rushed to the hospital where doctors confirmed the need for urgent surgical intervention. The cyst had been developing since Assem’s time in utero, and its rupture posed serious health risks. Although the operation on November 27 appeared successful, complications arose shortly after, leading to Assem suffering an ischaemic stroke due to a rare occurrence where fatty tissue leaked into a critical artery.
According to Natasha, approximately 75 percent of Assem’s brain function is now “completely gone.” Following the stroke, he was left in a coma for weeks before beginning a slow and challenging rehabilitation process. Natasha described the progress as “microscopic,” yet significant, as Assem has started to exhibit some voluntary movements and responsiveness during therapy.
Facing the Unimaginable
Natasha reflected on the emotional turmoil of watching her husband’s condition deteriorate. “You go from making decisions with someone to all of a sudden making decisions alone,” she said. Their plans for the future, including aspirations of raising more children and growing old together, now hang in a precarious balance.
The couple first met in March 2016 through mutual friends and married in 2018. Natasha spoke fondly of Assem’s vibrant personality and intellect, noting he was multilingual and had a passion for learning. “No marriage or relationship is perfect, but he was perfect for me,” she said.
On the day of the stroke, Assem endured excruciating pain that he initially attributed to fatigue. Despite Natasha’s encouragement to seek medical help, he insisted on waiting. Hours later, the couple found themselves in the emergency room, where the severity of Assem’s condition was quickly revealed through a CT scan.
Doctors informed Natasha that the cyst was an extremely rare find in the brain, typically located on women’s ovaries. They explained the risks associated with its rupture and the necessity of immediate surgery. Following the procedure, complications quickly escalated, culminating in Assem’s devastating stroke.
Hope Amid Uncertainty
As Assem continues his rehabilitation, the path to recovery remains uncertain. Natasha described the emotional weight of managing her family’s new reality, balancing care for Athena while advocating for Assem’s rehabilitation. “My life was pretty perfect,” she emphasized. “Now, I’m raising my child alone, and my husband cannot live independently.”
Despite the challenges, Natasha’s resolve to remain hopeful is unwavering. “What keeps me going is hope, and it’s the only thing I’ve got,” she shared. This hope is bolstered by the support of friends and family, who have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with Assem’s ongoing care. The campaign has so far raised over £40,000, aiming to cover rehabilitation costs and additional therapeutic treatments.
As Natasha navigates this difficult journey, she remains focused on the small victories. “Clinically, nothing has changed, but we have microscopic progress,” she said. “He’s cognitively present, responsive, and getting sharper.”
In the face of unimaginable challenges, Natasha continues to hold onto hope, determined to support Assem in whatever way she can while cherishing the memories of the life they once shared.
