Powys Enhances Healthcare Access with Convo App for BSL Users
Residents of Powys can now communicate more effectively with their healthcare providers through the introduction of the Convo app, previously known as SignLive. This innovative service allows British Sign Language (BSL) users to connect with their local NHS general practitioners, dentists, opticians, and pharmacies via a BSL interpreter. The app is designed to bridge the communication gap for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, ensuring equal access to medical services.
As of now, Convo is available across more than 80 healthcare facilities in Powys, including surgeries, dental practices, and pharmacies. This development positions Powys as a leader in Wales and among the top regions in the UK for BSL accessibility in healthcare. The app not only connects users to interpreters but also facilitates real-time conversations, making it easier for patients to receive the care they need.
Improving Communication in Healthcare
Adam Pearce, who oversees equality and Welsh language services at Powys Teaching Health Board, emphasized the significance of this service. He stated, “BSL users often struggle to use phone services. If you can’t hear, a phone isn’t helpful. Convo fixes that. Now BSL signers can contact their GP, hospital, dentist, optician, or pharmacy just like our hearing patients can. We think we’re the first health board in Wales—and maybe the UK—to offer this level of coverage.”
The Convo app is free for all residents in Powys. Users can easily download it to their mobile devices and select the appropriate service from the Community Directory. The interpreters can assist with leaving messages, scheduling callbacks, and joining appointments to facilitate live communication.
Leadership in Accessible Healthcare
This initiative coincides with the recent launch of updated guidance aimed at enhancing accessible communication across NHS Wales. Debra Wood-Lawson, Executive Director for People and Culture at Powys Teaching Health Board, remarked, “Powys is proud to lead the way in making healthcare easier to access for everyone.”
Through this strategic implementation, Powys Teaching Health Board demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity in healthcare, ensuring that all patients, regardless of their hearing ability, can access essential medical services without barriers.
The introduction of the Convo app marks a positive step towards improved healthcare accessibility in the region, reflecting a broader commitment to equality and inclusivity within the healthcare system.
