Students Face Freshers’ Flu as New Academic Year Begins
With the new academic year underway, universities across the UK are seeing a surge in students, many of whom may experience what is commonly referred to as freshers’ flu. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a reminder for students to verify their vaccination status as they settle into campus life.
The excitement of starting university often comes with the risk of falling ill, particularly in the initial weeks. Freshers’ flu is not an actual influenza virus but rather a term used to describe a collection of cold and flu-like symptoms that new students frequently encounter. This is partly due to the close quarters in which students live and the influx of individuals from various regions, creating an environment conducive to the spread of germs.
Understanding Freshers’ Flu Symptoms
Students should be aware that the symptoms of freshers’ flu can mimic those of other serious illnesses, such as Covid-19 and even meningitis. While meningitis is relatively rare, it can be life-threatening. The UKHSA emphasizes the importance of students ensuring they are up to date with their vaccinations.
Common symptoms associated with freshers’ flu include:
- A sore throat
- A stuffy or runny nose
- A cough
- Feelings of weakness or fatigue
- A headache
- A high temperature
- Feeling nauseous
- Reduced appetite
Preventing Illness During University Life
To minimize the risk of contracting freshers’ flu, students can adopt effective hygiene practices. Regularly washing hands with soap and warm water or using hand sanitizers can significantly reduce the transmission of germs. Additionally, students should refrain from sharing personal items, such as towels or cutlery, as this can facilitate the spread of illness.
The transition to university life often involves late nights and socializing, which can impact health. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, coupled with adequate sleep and limited alcohol consumption, can support the immune system. If a student begins to feel unwell, it is advisable to use tissues for coughs and sneezes and dispose of them immediately. Staying home to prevent infecting others and contacting the university health centre for medical assistance is also recommended.
Distinguishing between freshers’ flu and Covid-19 can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms. Covid-19 typically presents with a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or changes in taste or smell. For those feeling unwell, taking a Covid test can provide clarity. Tests are available for purchase at local pharmacies, supermarkets, or online.
For further information on flu symptoms and eligibility for the flu vaccine, students can visit NHS.UK. Additionally, the Flowflex test bundle, which includes both Covid and influenza tests, is available for £4, offering an affordable option for those uncertain about their symptoms. Each test provides results in minutes, aiding in the decision to rest, isolate, or seek medical advice.
As the academic year progresses, students are encouraged to prioritize their health and well-being, ensuring they can fully enjoy their university experience.
