Keep Grapes Fresh Longer with This Simple Vinegar Trick

Grapes, a popular and healthy snack, can spoil quickly after purchase, leaving consumers frustrated. A simple solution to extend their freshness involves washing them with white vinegar, according to Brittney Hanks, founder of Home and Kind. This method can significantly prolong the shelf life of grapes, keeping them juicy and crisp for up to 21 days longer.

Many people are unaware that grapes should not be stored in plastic containers. Plastic traps moisture, accelerating spoilage and causing grapes to become mouldy. Hanks emphasizes the effectiveness of white vinegar, which contains acetic acid that eliminates bacteria and mould spores without altering the fruit’s taste or texture.

How to Properly Wash Grapes

To apply this technique, create a solution by mixing 120 ml of white vinegar with water in a glass bowl. If white vinegar is unavailable, apple cider vinegar serves as a suitable alternative. After removing grapes from their vines, immerse them in the vinegar solution for approximately 10 minutes. It is important not to soak them for too long to avoid a vinegary flavour.

After soaking, rinse the grapes under cold water to remove any residual vinegar. They should then be placed on a clean tea towel to air dry for another 10 to 15 minutes. Ensuring the grapes are completely dry is crucial, as excess moisture can lead to mould growth.

Once dried, store the grapes in a lidded container or a mason jar. Placing them on a shelf in the refrigerator will help maintain their freshness. This method not only preserves grapes but also benefits other berries, such as blueberries and strawberries, making it a valuable strategy for reducing food waste and saving money on groceries.

By incorporating this simple washing technique, consumers can enjoy fresh, delicious grapes for weeks, transforming their snacking experience while minimizing waste.
