Montenegro Aims for EU Membership by 2028, Says Foreign Minister
Montenegro is set to complete necessary reforms and meet European Union (EU) membership criteria by the end of 2026, according to Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović. He emphasized that this membership is essential for ensuring political, economic, and overall security for the nation and the entire Western Balkans region.
During a recent statement, Ibrahimović highlighted the importance of adopting European values and standards across various sectors, including human rights and foreign policy alignment with the EU. He noted, “We can only achieve this if our membership in the EU results from the reforms of our societies and readiness to accept European values.”
The Foreign Minister expressed a strong commitment to EU integration, forecasting that Montenegro will officially join the EU by 2028 as a “logical continuation” of the accession process. He reaffirmed that Montenegro’s progress would not be contingent upon the pace of other countries in the region.
“Montenegro, due to its prosperity and European future, cannot wait for anyone on this path,” Ibrahimović stated. He underscored that with Montenegro’s EU membership, regional countries and all candidates for membership would gain a sincere partner and advocate within the EU.
Ibrahimović’s remarks reflect a broader ambition for the Western Balkans, where EU membership is viewed as a vital step toward ensuring stability and growth. He reiterated the importance of support for all countries in the region on their journey towards EU accession.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Ibrahimović expressed confidence in the EU’s role as a stabilizing force. He noted, “We envision a future where the Western Balkans is integrated within the EU framework, fostering a prosperous and secure environment for all.”
Montenegro’s proactive approach towards EU reforms demonstrates a commitment to the principles of democracy and human rights, crucial for aligning with EU standards. As the country moves forward, it aims to position itself as a key player in the EU integration process, advocating for its neighbors while pursuing its own goals.
With a roadmap laid out for the next few years, Montenegro’s journey towards EU membership reflects a critical phase in its history, promising to reshape not only its future but also the dynamics of the Western Balkans region.
