Belfast City Council Acquires Historic Assembly Rooms for Revitalization

Belfast City Council has officially completed the purchase of the historic Assembly Rooms, a significant step in the ongoing regeneration of the city centre. The local authority previously agreed to acquire the site, including adjoining lands and buildings, from Castlebrooke Investments. This initiative reflects the council’s commitment to revitalizing key areas within Belfast.

Located at the intersection of North Street and Waring Street, the Grade B1 listed building has a rich history dating back to 1769. It is recognized as one of the city’s most architecturally important public structures. Despite its historical significance, the Assembly Rooms have remained vacant since 2000, marking a prolonged period of underutilization.

The Assembly Rooms have traditionally served as a venue for political discourse, social gatherings, and entertainment in Northern Ireland’s largest city. Throughout the years, they have hosted numerous significant events, including the pivotal 1786 defeat of a proposal to establish a slave trading company in Belfast, as well as the 1792 Belfast Harp Festival, which celebrated the region’s musical heritage.

“This is both a significant and symbolic purchase for the council,” stated Councillor Natasha Brennan, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee. “Our acquisition of the Assembly Rooms and neighbouring properties provides a vital opportunity to infuse new life and vibrancy into this part of the city centre,” she added.
