The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society has reported the death of Mohammed Hussein Ghawadra, a 63-year-old detainee, while in the custody of Israeli authorities. Ghawadra passed away today after being held since August 2024 and allegedly denied critical medical treatment for chronic illnesses. His death has raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli facilities.

Medical Neglect and Human Rights Violations

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, Ghawadra’s death highlights what they describe as Israel’s “systematic crimes” against Palestinian detainees. The organization asserts that there is routine medical neglect, alongside physical and psychological abuse, occurring within Israeli prisons. Ghawadra’s passing brings the total number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody since the onset of Israel’s military operations in Gaza to 81. The society notes that, since 1967, at least 318 Palestinians have died while incarcerated.

Ghawadra was the father of Sami Ghawadra, who remains an administrative detainee without charge or trial. He is also the father of Shadi Ghawadra, who was released earlier this year and exiled to Egypt as part of a prisoner exchange with Hamas. The circumstances surrounding Ghawadra’s death have drawn sharp criticism from various human rights organizations, which have accused Israel of transforming its prisons into “slow-death chambers.”

These rights groups allege that Palestinian detainees are subjected to harsh interrogation practices, starvation, and a denial of necessary medical care. They emphasize that such treatment raises serious questions about the legality and ethics of Israel’s detention practices.

Response from Human Rights Organizations

In light of Ghawadra’s death, several human rights organizations have renewed their calls for accountability and reform within the Israeli prison system. They argue that the international community must address the ongoing violations of human rights and ensure that Palestinian detainees receive appropriate medical care and humane treatment.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society has urged for increased awareness and action regarding the plight of Palestinian detainees, highlighting that the conditions they endure can lead to preventable deaths. This tragic incident underscores the broader issues of human rights and justice within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
