Police have announced that no further action will be taken against Elizabeth Shimmin, a commissioner in Ramsey, following her controversial comments on social media regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Shimmin’s statement, which included a suggestion that Kirk should “burn in hell,” was made in response to a tribute posted on Facebook. The post, which has since been deleted, sparked public outrage and drew official scrutiny.

In a board meeting held earlier this month, Sandra Cottam-Shea, vice-chair of the Ramsey Town Commissioners, confirmed that the matter was under investigation. The Isle of Man Constabulary stated, “We can confirm that a complaint about a Facebook post made by a Ramsey Town Commissioner was made and that having referred this to the Attorney General’s Chambers there will be no further action taken by the police.” They further noted that the investigation has been returned to the local authority for further inquiry.

Despite the police’s decision, Shimmin remains under investigation by the Ramsey Town Commissioners. During the recent board meeting, Cottam-Shea emphasized the importance of the ongoing investigation, stating, “This matter is now under investigation which takes precedence and prevents any further public discussion at this time.” She also clarified that the board has no legal mechanism to suspend or expel Shimmin from meetings, leaving it to her to address the situation independently.

Shimmin was elected to the Ramsey Town Commissioners during the local elections earlier this year. The incident has drawn attention not only for its content but also for the broader implications of public officials’ statements on social media.

Kirk, who was shot dead on September 10, 2023, at Utah Valley University, was participating in a debate on gun crime at the time of the incident. Tyler Robinson, aged 22, has been charged with aggravated murder and witness tampering in connection with Kirk’s death. As investigations into both the shooting and Shimmin’s comments continue, the ramifications of such statements by public officials remain a topic of significant public interest and concern.
