West Stockbridge Police Force Expansion Leads to Increased Arrests

The expansion of the police force in West Stockbridge, under the leadership of new Police Chief Nicole Miller, has led to a significant increase in both arrests and emergency calls. During the Select Board meeting held on November 10, 2025, Miller reported a 13 percent increase in arrests year over year, with a total of 47 arrests recorded so far in 2025 compared to 41 arrests in the entire previous year.

The police department has also seen a dramatic 26 percent rise in the number of calls it has responded to, with 4,747 calls logged by mid-November 2025, up from 3,634 calls in 2024. This uptick has occurred alongside a growing police presence in the town, with the current force comprising five full-time officers and three part-time officers. Miller noted that the goal is to ensure two cruisers are on duty during each shift, allowing for more effective coverage and response capabilities.

During the meeting, Kathleen Keresey, a member of the Select Board, inquired whether the increase in activity could be attributed to the expanded police force. Miller confirmed this connection, stating, “We are here 24/7, 365.” She highlighted that the highest number of arrests in 2025 have occurred on Tuesdays, while Sundays have recorded the fewest, although she could not ascertain the reasons behind these patterns.

The department has also added an overnight officer since the end of September, which is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety. In an email to The Berkshire Edge, Miller emphasized that motor vehicle stops are a key focus area, with 585 stops made in 2025 as the department actively addresses speeding complaints and works to improve roadway safety.

In addition to these statistics, the police department has experienced a 21 percent increase in medical response calls and a significant 48 percent rise in alarm activations compared to the previous year. There have been 27 motor vehicle accidents reported within West Stockbridge so far in 2025, further highlighting the department’s ongoing commitment to ensuring community safety.

As the police force continues to grow, it appears that the focus on proactive measures and increased visibility is shaping the nature of law enforcement in West Stockbridge, contributing to both a rise in arrests and a more engaged community response.
