Black Hawk College Unveils $29 Million Career Education Center

Black Hawk College has officially opened its newly renovated career and technical education center, designed to equip students with vital skills for the modern workforce. The project, which began construction last year, has transformed one of the college’s buildings into a robust educational facility spanning 66,000 square feet. This center will focus on various fields, including e-sports, cybersecurity, forensics, industrial and preventative maintenance, and mechatronics.

In addition to the expansive educational spaces, the college has dedicated a 4,000 square-foot area specifically for welding, fabrication, and grinding. The total investment in this project amounted to $29 million, reflecting the institution’s commitment to enhancing vocational training in the region.

Preparing Students for Tomorrow’s Workforce

According to Steven Frommelt, executive vice president of finance and administration, the new facility is designed to provide students with practical applications of current technologies used in the workplace. He emphasized that Black Hawk College aims to be the lowest-cost provider of education in its area, ensuring access to quality training for local students.

Frommelt noted the potential for the facility to host outside programs in the future, such as “College for Kids,” allowing for greater community engagement. The renovations are not just about updating infrastructure; they also incorporate future-ready technology.

Jeremy Thomas, president of Black Hawk College, highlighted the flexibility of the new center, stating, “This space is built in a way that if we miss something, we are able to then adapt accordingly.” He expressed optimism about the impact the facility will have on students in the coming years, saying, “I hope students are excited. In fact, I know they will be. They’re getting to get trained in a world-class facility.”
