The upcoming EasyCare open evening on July 30, 2025, at Ballycoose Farm in Cairncastle will highlight the transformative potential of genomics within the sheep farming sector. Hosted by local farmer Campbell Tweed, the event promises to offer insights into how genomic technologies can enhance breeding performance and overall flock health.

Genomic Insights Driving Sheep Performance

A representative from Signet emphasized that genomics is revolutionizing the sheep industry. “We are at the dawn of a genomic age, moving from genetic predictions based solely on pedigree and performance data to those that now incorporate genomic data,” she explained. This new approach includes information about variations in an animal’s DNA and the specific genes it carries.

Genomic data holds promise for numerous applications, including sire and dam verification, which is crucial for pedigree societies. The ability to identify parentage through DNA analysis is particularly beneficial for flocks transitioning from single sire mating, a common practice in hill breeding programs.

Furthermore, genotyping can uncover the presence of significant genes related to Scrapie resistance, muscle growth linked to myostatin, and fertility. The Signet representative noted that genomic information adds depth to understanding traits that may only manifest in one sex, develop later in life, or are costly to measure, such as methane production or meat quality.

Currently, Signet manages genomic evaluation systems associated with seven hill breeds and three terminal sire breeds. In collaboration with various research projects and individual breeders, Signet aims to integrate genomic data into maternal breeding programs over the next few years.

Event Details and the Future of EasyCare Sheep

The EasyCare open evening will commence at 18:00 local time, allowing attendees to view a selection of ewes, lambs, and rams from Tweed’s flock, which features some of the most progressive EasyCare bloodlines in the UK and Ireland. Campbell Tweed shared that the event serves as a platform to showcase the results of meticulous performance recording undertaken through both the Signet and Sheep Ireland programs, which have played a pivotal role in their breeding success.

“EasyCare sheep are known for their ability to shed wool, but there is much more to their breeding program,” Campbell stated. His focus is on producing ewes that efficiently utilize grass, maintain high health standards, and lamb outdoors with minimal human intervention. The results from flock recording programs have been instrumental in achieving these goals.

Interest in EasyCare sheep continues to rise across Ireland, reflecting a growing recognition of their efficiency and performance. Campbell noted, “These sheep enable flock owners to optimize their time while achieving exceptional performance levels.” Members of the EasyCare Sheep Ireland Group will also attend the open evening.

Campbell and his wife Isobel run their farm near the village of Carncastle, East County Antrim. He expressed gratitude to Dunbia for their support in providing refreshments for the event.

As demand for breeding EasyCare ewes, lambs, and rams increases, Campbell is currently accepting orders. He concluded, “We offer fully recorded stock that can significantly enhance any sheep enterprise. The increasing interest in EasyCare bloodlines is an encouraging trend for the future of sheep farming.”
