Lando Norris Takes the Wheel in Pirelli Test at Yas Marina
Newly crowned Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris is back on track today, participating in a crucial post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. This test is part of an evaluation for Pirelli’s tire range set for the 2026 season. Norris, alongside his teammate Oscar Piastri, will share driving duties, each taking turns before and after lunch.
Notably absent from the test is Max Verstappen, who played a significant role in this year’s title fight. Instead, his 2026 teammate Isack Hadjar will take over the Red Bull car for the entire day. Additionally, new recruit Arvid Lindblad will also be participating in the test, showcasing the team’s commitment to future success.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, who experienced a challenging debut season with Ferrari, will drive alone throughout the day. This season marked the first time in Hamilton’s illustrious career that he did not secure a podium finish. Following the conclusion of this season, the seven-time champion has expressed a desire to “unplug from the matrix” of Formula 1, indicating a need for a break from the sport.
Testing for the Future
Tuesday’s test involves all ten teams from this season, each aiming to assess Pirelli’s various tire compounds for the upcoming season. Teams will run two vehicles: a regular 2025 model driven by a young driver with limited race experience, and a specially adapted “mule” car designed specifically for the new tires. Regular drivers, including Norris, Hamilton, and Hadjar, will pilot these “mule” cars, allowing them to provide critical feedback on the new tire technology.
The emphasis on testing reflects the teams’ preparation for the evolving demands of Formula 1. With the landscape of racing continually changing, these insights into tire performance are vital for success in the 2026 season. As the sport moves forward, the collaboration between teams and tire manufacturers will play a significant role in shaping the future of Formula 1 racing.
This post-season test not only provides valuable data for the teams but also serves as a platform for young drivers to gain experience. By integrating emerging talent with established stars, Formula 1 reinforces its commitment to the sport’s future, ensuring a dynamic and competitive environment on and off the track.
