Former Heavy Smoker Celebrates 1,000 Days Smoke-Free After Health Scare

Jim Partington, a former heavy smoker, has achieved a remarkable milestone by remaining smoke-free for over 1,000 days. The 62-year-old from Oldham turned his life around after receiving a dire diagnosis of vascular disease, which threatened his health and mobility.
Partington began smoking at the tender age of ten, quickly becoming addicted to nicotine. He often bought cigarettes under the pretext of purchasing them for his mother, a practice that went unchallenged at the time. Over the decades, his habit escalated to around 40 cigarettes a day, despite facing numerous health scares, including heart attacks and angina.
Reflecting on his journey, Partington described the moment he learned of his condition as a “stark wake-up call.” Doctors informed him that if he did not quit smoking, he risked losing a leg due to severe vascular disease, a condition characterized by inflammation and weakness in the veins and arteries. “I’ve always enjoyed having two legs, and I wanted to keep it that way,” he explained.
Struggling with mobility and breathlessness, Partington recognized the need for a change. Previously, he had attempted to quit multiple times, with his longest stretch being just four days. After his diagnosis, he realized he had to take immediate action. “There was a serious chance of me losing my leg. It really shook me up,” he said.
Support and Determination Propel Change
Partington’s transformation began when he and his wife, Sarah Partington, decided to quit smoking together. Sarah had also been a long-time smoker since age ten, facing her own health challenges, including sciatica. Both sought help from the free stop smoking service provided by Your Health Oldham on behalf of the NHS. The couple attended weekly meetings with an advisor who offered crucial support.
Partington ultimately found success using two nicotine patches, a method recommended by their advisor. “Because I was a heavy smoker, she suggested I use two patches instead of one, which made it easier to deal with cravings,” he noted. This approach allowed him to gradually cut back on nicotine over time.
The couple’s success has not only improved their health but also transformed their lifestyle. “We now go abroad twice a year, which is something we could never have done before. It’s astronomical how much money we have saved,” Partington shared. He now views his health as a priority, often reminding his wife of their travels when cravings arise. “If Sarah says she could murder a fag, I say, just think of Portugal.”
Partington’s story serves as an inspiring example of how determination and support can lead to significant lifestyle changes. He encourages others struggling with similar challenges to consider seeking help. For those looking to quit smoking, resources are available through organizations like Your Health Oldham and the NHS.
As Jim Partington continues to embrace his smoke-free life, he hopes to inspire others to make positive changes for their health.
