Market Drayton Town’s Konnor Higgins Shines on Debut with Winning Goal
Seventeen-year-old Konnor Higgins made an impressive debut for Market Drayton Town, scoring the winning goal just minutes after being introduced in a match against Barnton. The Gingerbread Men secured a 2-1 victory at Greenfields, extending their unbeaten run to one defeat in seven matches in the North West Counties First Division South.
Higgins, a former player for the Market Drayton Tigers, entered the match with his team already leading 1-0, thanks to an early goal by Jack Finney. With nine minutes remaining, Higgins showcased his talent with a well-placed finish, adding to the scoreline. Although Barnton managed to pull one back, Market Drayton held on for a significant win.
Higgins’ Impact on the Game
The goal was described by manager Dan Dawson as a classic route-one finish. He explained, “Our goalkeeper’s banged it upfield, and striker Harry Minshall helped it on with his first touch. Our winger passed it to Konnor, who was in behind the centre-halves, in the middle of the goal, 10 yards out, and he smashed it in the roof of the net with his first touch. It was a really nice little finish.”
Dawson expressed confidence in Higgins’ potential and character, highlighting his dedication and work ethic. “He’s a lovely kid; his mum and his brothers come to every game, as does he when he’s not playing for our development team,” Dawson noted. “He’ll certainly play for our first team. We want him to be the future of the club.” He emphasized that beyond football, Higgins is a mature and coachable young man, stating, “If he carries on doing that, he’ll be the future of Drayton at step six, five, four, whatever it may be.” Dawson highlighted Higgins’ physical attributes, adding that he is “pacey, bigger, and stronger than he probably gives himself credit for.”
Match Highlights and Upcoming Fixtures
The match concluded with both teams reduced to ten players after Archie Russell from Market Drayton was dismissed. This victory propelled Market Drayton Town to 13th place in the league standings, just ahead of midweek fixtures. The team will not be in action this weekend as they participate in a Christmas event in Manchester.
The promising debut of Konnor Higgins adds a bright spot to Market Drayton’s season and reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent. As the team looks ahead, they will be counting on players like Higgins to contribute to their success in the league.
