Celtic Appoints Wilfried Nancy as New Head Coach Following Rodgers Exit
Celtic FC has appointed Wilfried Nancy as their new head coach, concluding a search that lasted over a month for a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers. Nancy has signed a two-and-a-half year contract and will officially start his role on Thursday.
Rodgers departed after a disappointing 3-1 loss to Hearts, the current leaders of the Scottish Premiership. In the interim, Martin O’Neill took charge of the team, assisted by Shaun Maloney. Under their guidance, Celtic has won all five of their domestic matches, including a notable 3-1 victory in the Scottish League Cup semifinal against Rangers. This win has secured Celtic a place in the final against St. Mirren on December 14. The only defeat O’Neill faced was a 3-1 loss in the Europa League to Midtjylland.
In a statement following his appointment, Nancy expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I am so happy to be named Celtic Manager, it is a massive honour for myself and my family.” He extended his gratitude to O’Neill and Maloney for their excellent work during a challenging period. “Now it’s up to me to carry on this great work and carry our great club forward,” he added, highlighting his readiness to embrace the high expectations associated with Celtic.
Celtic’s chairman, Peter Lawwell, welcomed Nancy, commending his coaching record and the attacking style of football he is known to promote. “We will give Wilfried all our support as we look to once again bring success to our fans,” Lawwell stated.
Nancy’s coaching career includes a successful tenure at Columbus Crew, where he led the team to the 2023 MLS Cup title and the 2024 Leagues Cup. Despite Columbus finishing in seventh place in the MLS Eastern Conference this season and being eliminated by FC Cincinnati in the first round of the playoffs, Nancy was recognized as the MLS Coach of the Year in 2024. Prior to that, he was at CF Montréal.
“I know the history, I know the values of Celtic and I know what is expected of me on this journey,” Nancy remarked. He emphasized the significance of the club to its fans and expressed his commitment to delivering “strong, exciting, attacking, winning football” that supporters can take pride in. His first match in charge of Celtic will be against Hearts, the team they are currently trailing by four points, on Sunday.
As Celtic embarks on this new chapter under Nancy, the club aims to reclaim its position at the top of Scottish football, with high hopes for the upcoming fixtures and the rest of the season.
