Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has recently published his memoir titled *Le journal d’un prisonnier*, detailing his 20 days in a Paris prison. Released on October 12, 2023, the book provides an intimate account of his time spent in solitary confinement at the Sainte prison.

In this memoir, Sarkozy describes his cell, measuring approximately 12 square meters, equipped with a bed, desk, refrigerator, shower, and a television. He notes that while the cell was clean and well-lit, its view was obstructed by a large plastic panel. Sarkozy humorously reflects, “If it weren’t for the reinforced door with a peephole for the guards, one might think they were in a two-star hotel.”

Sarkozy was incarcerated following a conviction for corruption and influence peddling related to his 2007 election campaign, where he was found guilty of accepting illegal funds from Muammar Gaddafi. He was sentenced to five years in prison, of which he served only a fraction before being released. Despite the gravity of his situation, he chose not to take advantage of the daily exercise opportunities, describing the outdoor space as “more like a cage than a place to walk.” Instead, he opted to work out on a treadmill in a small gym, which he referred to as a “true oasis” during his confinement.

The former president recounted his struggles with sleep, attributing his insomnia to a neighboring inmate who sang the song “Circle of Life” from *The Lion King* throughout the night, accompanied by the sound of banging on the cell bars. Despite the challenging environment, Sarkozy expressed gratitude for the respect shown to him by the prison guards, all of whom addressed him as “Mr. President.”

Throughout his time in prison, Sarkozy decorated his cell walls with letters and postcards from supporters, which offered him some comfort. He reflected on the kindness displayed by those around him during a difficult time, stating, “The warmth and respect I felt from the guards was touching.”

Sarkozy’s legal troubles began when he was implicated in a scheme involving illicit funding for his political campaigns. The court ruled against him in October 2023, marking a significant moment in his career. Although a judge could have allowed him to remain free pending appeal, he was ordered to serve time immediately.

Just three weeks after entering prison, Sarkozy was released following a petition from his legal team. He has consistently denied the charges, claiming to be a victim of a politically motivated campaign by certain factions within the French judicial system. Following his release, Sarkozy’s estrangement from the Legion of Honour provided him an opportunity to criticize current French President Emmanuel Macron. Once a close ally, Sarkozy now claims that he has “turned the page,” though he does not intend to oppose Macron’s policies or character outright.

Sarkozy’s memoir, filled with personal anecdotes and reflections, offers insight into the mind of a leader facing significant legal challenges, as well as a window into the complexities of French politics today.
