Bruno Fernandes’ Tactical Call Fuels Manchester United’s Winning Streak
Manchester United has responded positively to captain Bruno Fernandes’ tactical suggestions, contributing to a recent surge in performance. Following a challenging start to the season, where the team faced criticism for its rigid formation, United has secured victories in their last three league matches. They aim to extend this winning streak to four when they face Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Under the management of Ruben Amorim, United displayed resilience with a notable 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield, followed by an impressive 4-2 win at home against Brighton. Goals from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro, and a brace from Bryan Mbeumo highlighted the team’s attacking prowess and raised hopes for sustained success.
Amorim’s tactics have faced scrutiny, particularly regarding his preference for a 3-4-3 formation. Critics argue that this system does not suit the team’s strengths. However, Fernandes made significant remarks following a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in September, emphasizing the need for tactical adjustments. He pointed out that for United to thrive, midfield players must engage more actively in the game.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes stated, “We need people to be very aggressive in the moment of pressure. If you look at City, they had Rodri, Tiji [Reijnders], Bernardo [Silva], and [Phil] Foden creating a midfield four against our two.” He stressed the importance of midfield engagement, indicating that without this, the team would struggle against formidable opponents.
Fernandes’ insights appear to have influenced recent performances. Notably, Luke Shaw received praise for his proactive role against Brighton, frequently stepping up from his defensive position to support the midfield. This strategic movement provided additional support for Fernandes and Casemiro, enabling a more balanced and effective midfield.
Shaw’s contribution culminated in an assist for Casemiro’s goal, which showcased the importance of teamwork in the new tactical approach. Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards discussed this on “The Rest Is Football” podcast, stating, “Luke Shaw was very brave the way he stepped in, and then they go and get the goal.” He noted that this flexibility from players like Shaw and Cunha has allowed United to regain control of matches.
The shift in tactics has not only enhanced the team’s performance but has also instilled a sense of confidence among players. Fernandes’ call for greater midfield support has evidently sparked a turnaround, with United now finding their rhythm on the pitch. The challenge moving forward will be maintaining this level of performance consistently.
As Manchester United gears up for their next match, the club’s supporters are hopeful that the team can build on this winning momentum. The blend of tactical adaptability and player cooperation has marked a significant turnaround from earlier struggles, making for an exciting phase in United’s season.
